Santa Ana, CA — Chris Ashton at Ruffian Cars in Southern California builds wild, one-off, turn-key classics inspired by vintage racing and supercar styling. For past Ruffian projects, Chris has turned classic Ford Mustangs, Galaxies and GT40s into fire-breathing, heart-pounding, works of art that are meant to be driven. This time around, Chris honed in on something different. For the next Ruffian project, Chris set his sites on a 1972 Chevy El Camino SS fitted with a 632 Big Block.

Unique inspiration. In order to solve weight distribution issues, Chris took inspiration from an unlikely source: a Matchbox El Camino with the engine positioned behind the cab in the bed. Moving the engine position from front to mid paired with a rear transaxle shifts the load over the rear tires and helps put power down to the asphalt.
Fitting the bill. Chris wanted traditional H-pattern shifting for this unique new creation. He also needed a solid trans that can handle the 632 Big Block power. The Weddle HV25 made perfect sense.
Stay tuned to watch the Ruffian Mid-engine El Camino come to life. To see more amazing transformations of classic Ford Mustangs, Galaxies and GT40s, check out the Ruffian website. Each unique build is detailed in an exclusive book.
